Celebrate the Mothers and Mother Figures in Mothers Day

In a sea of annual celebrations, Mother’s Day is one of the most important days of the year.

Yes, you’ve likely already heard that message from every retailer in town looking to sell you a gift. But, truly, this is an opportunity to recognise the mothers and mother figures whose love, hard work and commitment has shaped each of us in unique and tangible ways.

Mother’s Day has expanded over recent years to pay tribute to both mothers and those who provide maternal love alike. This creates a rich opportunity to evaluate who in your world has offered that most generous of love. Mother’s Day gives us each a chance to honour, appreciate and acknowledge the community of women in these roles. Biological mothers. Adoptive mothers. Stepmothers. Grandmothers. Aunts. Mentors. ‘Mothers’ come in all shapes and sizes.

If you’re looking for a way to celebrate the mothers in your world without getting caught up in the commercialisation of this holiday, here are five unique ways to mark this moment.

Have a lavish spa experience – at home

Day spas can be a beautiful experience and are often a popular way to honour Mum and other mothers in your world on Mother’s Day. If you’re looking for a unique spin on a day spa gift voucher, however, it’s time to bring the spa experience in-house.

Creating a relaxing and rejuvenating spa experience at home can be a lovely way to celebrate Mother’s Day without breaking the bank. Create the atmosphere with soft music, candles and dimmed lighting.

If you’ve got multiple mothers or mother figures, this can also be a fantastic group activity. Homemade face masks, warm foot soaks and gentle massages with aromatic oils can all work together to create a luxurious spa experience within the comfort of your own home.

Not only is this a more affordable way to give your mother a care-filled experience, but this can be more intimate and enjoyable than an actual day spa. By creating opportunities to connect and engage throughout each spa activity, you can add an extra layer of togetherness to this traditional Mother’s Day gift.

Linger over a picnic

A simple picnic can be one of the most memorable ways to celebrate Mother’s Day. This is a particularly great choice of activity if you’ve got a number of family members coming together for the event, creating an easy way for everyone to contribute meaningfully.

Picnics can be made all the more enjoyable by putting a little bit of extra time and effort into their planning. Alongside the most important question – what are we eating? – are details like seating, drinks, shade, and comfort.

If you want to take your picnic to the next level, throw these items into your packing list:

  • A marquee. A simple pop-up marquee can provide shade that’ll make it all the more enjoyable to stay out for hours. Without shade, you may find your picnic’s lifespan is short-lived.
  • Pillows and picnic rugs. Want to elevate your picnic from everyday to luxurious? Throw cushions, pillows, and rugs can make the simplest of family picnics something to truly remember.
  • A speaker. Take the time to add some of Mum’s favourite songs to a playlist and bring a portable speaker to your picnic location. It’ll quickly set the scene for a relaxed and enjoyable picnic together.

Capture priceless, unique memories

If you know your mum well, it may be easy to buy her a beautiful Mother’s Day gift – but what if she’s already got what she needs, or she’s tough to buy for?

Creating a gift that’s based on memories and gratitude can be a unique way to show your love and appreciation. We’ve got two ideas for this gift: a memory jar or a gratitude journal.

For the memory jar, you’ll need a beautifully decorated jar (look for something that reminds you of Mum or craft your own) and note cards. Ask each of your family members to write down their favourite memories, timeless stories or things they love about your mother/mother figure. Fold these in half and fill the jar up – on Mother’s Day, you can gift this to your mother, encouraging her to revisit each note whenever she needs a fresh reminder of the love and appreciation her family has for her.

A gratitude journal can capture the same kind of love and reflection from a wide variety of friends and family members. You can either ask everyone to submit their stories and reflections for you to collate, or pass a journal around from person to person, capturing the unique memories your mum will be thrilled to look back on. It’s a priceless gift filled with love.

Organise a surprise party

What better way could there be to celebrate the person who’s likely organised plenty of parties herself over the years?

A surprise party can be a fun, memorable and unexpected way to truly celebrate this Mother’s Day. The great thing about surprise parties is they also don’t need a significant amount of cash spent. By simply gathering your mother’s favourite people together in one place, at one time, you’ve got all the ingredients you need for an event she’ll never forget.

You can also combine some of the other ideas on this list to really ramp up the party experience. A location-based surprise party, or a surprise party where everyone shares reflections and gratitudes about your mother/mother figure in a group storytelling experience.
