As we start to head into the cooler months, the incidence of coughs and colds increases, not to mention the dreaded “C” word! This simple home-made cold and flu remedy is affectionately known by my family as “Onion Juice”. It really is so quick and easy to make, and it is surprisingly nice to drink.

I love this recipe because I always have the ingredients in in the kitchen and making this can be much easier than going to the shops for some cold and flu medicine, especially if you or your loved one comes down with a cough in the middle of the night!

Ingredients:

3-4 brown onions, sliced

1 tablespoon honey

Water

Directions:

  1. Place sliced onions into a saucepan and add enough water to cover them.
  2. Add honey.
  3. Place on the stove and bring to the boil. Turn down the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  4. Place a sieve over a large bowl or jug and pour the onions and water into the sieve. Allow the liquid to drain through.
  5. Discard the onions and keep the liquid in the fridge. This liquid is your onion juice. It will keep in the fridge for about 3 days.
  6. Consume about 50mls at a time, throughout the day.
